The Joint Replacement Institute: Our Story
Hip or knee pain due to arthritis or related conditions can have a significant negative impact on a person’s quality of life. Arthritis pain can lead to limitations in mobility and daily function, sleep disturbance, and loss of enjoyment with recreational activities.
We are pleased with the success of the Joint Replacement Institute (JRIO) and how we have been able to help people enjoy more active and fulfilling lives. I am particularly pleased because it has been a long term goal of mine to participate in the development of a joint replacement center. I thought now might be a good time to share some thoughts about how we got here.
I became interested in specializing in hip and knee replacement surgery early in my orthopaedic surgery training. I found it gratifying to see the positive impact these procedures had on patients’ lives. I frequently heard patients say that, “I feel like I got my life back.”
Over the past 10-15 years my practice has focused on hip and knee replacement surgery. I have seen that while the quality of joint replacement surgery in our area is good, the process for delivering this care was often uncoordinated and frequently confusing for patients. I have seen the need for greater and more consistent patient education, and for better integration of the multiple practitioners and staff members involved in a patient’s care. I believed that if these issues were addressed, patient satisfaction would improve and the quality of care for these patients would be even better.
The ideal joint replacement center would:
- Provide a seamless process for patients from the time they schedule surgery to their hospital stay and the subsequent recovery period afterward.
- Be pleasant, uncomplicated and as pain free as possible.
- Provide technology that is the right mixture of cutting-edge and the already proven, superior service and education for patients and their families.
- Be a program that patients recommend to a friend or family member, or return to it themselves if necessary.
At Willamette Valley Medical Center I found an administration, orthopaedic department, and staff that share this vision. We have worked together for the last seven years to develop the Joint Replacement Institute of Oregon (JRIO). The JRIO program is patient and family centered with an emphasis on patient education and comfort, coordinated care among hospital departments, tracking of outcomes and continual quality improvement.
We are all unified toward one goal: providing the best possible experience and outcome for all of our patients. It is truly a privilege to provide care for those needing hip and knee replacement surgery.
